Shop local this season at these special events [UPDATED]

Has Black Friday jumped the shark? Now that hundreds of stores are opening for Christmas shopping at the witching hour of midnight, it almost feels as if the consumer holiday has reached the point of parody. But then, when you stop and think of last year's shopping deaths and even this year's petitions by Target employees to bring back Thanksgiving, you can see that this is no laughing matter.

That said, just because the ads on TV are calling shoppers to the malls like sirens call sailors to the rocky shores that doesn't mean that you have to spend your sparse free time this season in a chain store. In fact, there are many special shopping events around town where you'll find great gifts made by local artisans in environments that are way more low-key.

We've put together a list of those happenings this season. So if you'd rather sleep in and head out at a leisurely pace, then these events may be best for you.
