Public Functionary presents an artsy pumpkin installation for Halloween

It's been about a year since the folks at Public Functionary launched an ambitious Kickstarter that allowed the northeast Minneapolis gallery to hit the ground running. Tonight and Friday, you can check out the fruits of their second Kickstarter campaign, where people sponsored the artistic carved pumpkins that now fill the gallery space.

Tricia Khutoretsky, director of Public Functionary, says she and the other organizers have wanted to have a Halloween exhibtion. "You get less and less interested in Halloween as adults, but it's amazing as kids," she says. "It's so much more magical." For the installation, the gallery is going more contemporary over cheesy and spooky. "It just celebrates Halloween for the essence of what it is," she says.

Since they didn't have a show scheduled until November, the gallery decided to host an event that could also act as a fundraiser. The way the benefit worked was that for every $25 donated, they would add another pumpkin. "It's been great," she says. "We've made over $1,000."

Thirty artists signed up to help, and participated in what Khutoretsky calls an "open carving factory." They pieces go on display today starting at 4 p.m. today. In addition to the pumpkins, there will be lots of cool light installations, projections using Playata technology, and a fun photo booth.

Since opening, Public Functionary has showcased a diverse range of artists, and wowed people with their fun opening parties and special events. For the Great Pumpkin installation, the gallery is hoping to create a more kid-oriented environment, welcoming people in the neighborhood to come check out the gallery.

"It's really family-friendly," Khutoretsky says. "We promoted within the neighborhood. We're trying to have a more community focus."

The event includes face-painting and trick-or-treating stations, plus spinning by Get Cryphy.
