Our state may be home of the mega-mall, but these days it's smaller boutiques that seem to be popping up everywhere in the Twin Cities. This week, three more businesses are opening in Minneapolis. As is to be expected, each will celebrate with deals, drinks, and other treats.
Here are the details:
Proper & Prim
( Shinola and Filson
(228 Washington Ave. N., Minneapolis)
Over the past year or so, the North Loop in downtown Minneapolis has been adding new businesses -- including grocery shops, high-end boutiques, and major coffee chains -- to the neighborhood. This week marks the opening of two shops, Shinola and Filson, in the former Dunn Bros. Coffee space on Washington.
Not familiar with either brand? Shinola is a Detroit-based company that specializes in American-made items including bicycles, journals, watches, and leather goods. Their brand's bikes will also be sold at Angry Catfish Bicycle + Coffee Bar.
Meanwhile, next door, Seattle-based Filson is kind of like Abercrombie & Fitch if A&F had never repositioned themselves as a brand for "trendy" teens and college kids. The business, which was established in 1897, specializes in outdoor goods and apparel. Expect to find heavy-duty bags, flannels, boots, belts, and gear appropriate for fly fishers, hunters, world travelers, farmers, and south Minneapolis hipsters.
To celebrate the opening of both stores, which also open on Thursday, the neighborhood will be hosting a summer shopping party on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. Both stores will be giving demonstrations, while Shinola will have Truce juice on hand for sampling. Other activities and treats at various shops in the area include free PBR, champagne, cocktails from Marvel (Askov Finlayson), and special sales.
