President Obama book shops, purchases 3 books by MN authors
Politicians: They're just like us. Last Saturday, folks across America took to local boutiques, stores, and pop-up events in support of Small Business Saturday. President Obama was part of that crowd, as well. He and his daughters, Malia and Sasha, took a trip to an independent bookstore to pick up some gifts.
Of the 21 books he purchased at Politics and Prose, a local independent coffeehouse and bookstore, three were by Minnesota writers.
In his shopping bag that day was Wild: From Lost to Found On the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed, whose best seller chronicles the McGregor, Minnesota native's transformational 1,100-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail; Heart of a Samurai, Duluth's Margi Preus's award-winning work about a Japanese teen who learns about U.S. culture after being shipwrecked and rescued by an American ship; and Flora and Ulysses, Kate DiCamillo's whimsical tale about a squirrel who develops special powers after surviving a vacuum mishap.
His shopping list also included classics like My Antonia, Ragtime, and Harold and the Purple Crayon; critically acclaimed works such as Jhumpa Lahiri's The Lowland and Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner; and something presumably for the sports lover in his social circle, The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance and Collision Low Crossers: A Year Inside the Turbulent World of NFL Football.
