Welcome to the tundra: Jeremy Cohen joins the Playwrights' Center
Cohen will leave his post as Associate Artistic Director and Director of New Play Development at Hartford Stage
, where he has worked for the past six years. His tenure there was marked by the cultivation of new plays and expansion of festival formats for producing new work.
Prior to his stint at Hartford Stage, Cohen was founder of Chicago's Naked Eye Theatre Company, where he developed and directed 20 plays and enjoyed resident-comany status at Steppenwolf Theatre.
"I'm in love with the Twin Cities," Cohen said in a prepared statement. "It is by far one of the most vibrant and collaborative incubators for new work in this country, and all the working artists there--in theatre, music, dance, visual art, and the various University programs--are pushing the envelope of creating new art at the forefront of the field."
We might tend to take the PWC for granted, given its long tenure in the local arts ecology, but it remains a unique institution with an unwavering support for writers and the promotion of new work. With Cohen at the helm, the Center will undeniably enter a new phase, and it will be little short of fascinating to discern the particular details of the journey ahead.
