Last November, Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator and star Joel Hodgson announced that he was launching a Kickstarter to help fund a reboot of the beloved, long-running series. By making the show for the people, by the people, he hoped to raise $2 million, which would fund three episodes. That goal was quickly blown out of the water, and the tally now stands at 28,969 backers who have pledged $3,366,802.
Like any good Kickstarter, the MST3K gang has been offering rewards as fans donate toward each goal. It was recently revealed that Felicia Day (Supernatural, The Guild) will be joining the show on the side of evil as a relative of Dr. Clayton Forrester, Jonah Ray (The Nerdist Podcast) has been cast as the new host, and Baron Vaughn and Kendrick LáBlart are also on board.
Yesterday, Hodgson tweeted that Oswalt would be part of shenanigans as well. He appears to be overjoyed, to say the least:
TV Frank, a not-so-nefarious henchman who rocked a lime-green coat, was Forrester's partner in crime. He also frequently pushed the button that forced the lonely Joel to watch the shittiest movies ever... in space. Oswalt seems interested in continuing this button-pushing tradition:
With 10 days left, six new episodes are MST3K are guaranteed. However, the crew hopes to raise $5.5 by the end of the project, which would allow them to film a full season of 12 episodes. The end goal is to eventually be picked up by an online service or television station.
