Paper Darts hosts a pop-up show at SooLOCAL
What happens when art and literature collide? A lot, according to "A Storefront for Storytellers," a brand-new partnership between Paper Darts and SooLOCAL. For the ongoing event, Paper Darts has brought together over 25 organizations and artists to collaborate on a slew of happenings, giving the storefront over to vibrant art, literature, food, and even gaming communities.
Organizations involved include Story City, Thirty Two Magazine, Mizna, MPLSzine, Books & Bars, Revolver, and the Loft Literary Center. More than 20 events will be crammed into the pop-ups party's six-week lifespan.
The official launch event takes place on Friday, June 14, with the release of Paper Darts Volume Five.
"Storefront for Storytellers" will be the equivalent of a 3-D frolic through a Paper Darts magazine: bold design, bright colors, edgy art, and even edgier literature will be sharing wall space instead of page space. It's clearly meant to be an extension of the magazine. "Whether in print or online, Paper Darts blurs the worlds of images and words, and this storefront is no different," editor-in-chief Megan Murphy says.
The collaborative storefront's vision also pays homage to the plethora of literary and artistic organizations popping up all over town. Paper Darts executive director Jamie Millard says that the founding vision was to "celebrate the underbelly of our art and lit community -- the emerging organizations and artists that don't yet have physical spaces of their own and are mainly volunteers working on labors of love." As a successful volunteer-run organization themselves, it makes sense for Paper Darts to lead the charge in providing a physical -- albeit temporary -- home for like-minded organizations.
Millard goes on to point out the growing support for such organizations locally. "This underdog community has boomed in the past five years, and I think we're in the middle of a wonderful trend happening in the Twin Cities," she says. If the pop-up happening achieves its mission, the Twin Cities will hopefully see more and more budding organizations embracing, rather than competing, against each other.
What can attendees expect? "We want pop-up visitors to experience the new story that's created when art and words overlap, collide, and make beautiful little babies," Murphy says.
Promising events include "The Secret Sauce of Book Marketing" on Tuesday, June 18, where hilarious and talented local writer Maggie Ryan Sandford will moderate a discussion with marketing gurus from powerhouse publishers Graywolf Press and Milkweed Editions. A star-studded line-up of readers descend onto the storefront on Wednesday, June 19, with Lara Avery, John Jodzio, Ethan Rutherford, Sally Franson, Shane Hawley, and Nicole Helget. July 14 features a spoken-word night, and Paper Darts teams up with cultural/literary magazine Thirty Two for "A Movable Feast: A Literary Pop-Up Dinner" on June 30. Close your eyes and let your finger fall where it may on the calendar, you're going to find something worth venturing out for.
