Macalester College announced today that Laverne Cox will be coming to Minnesota this fall to give a talk at the school. The activist and actor is best known for her role as Sophia Burset, a trans women serving time (last seen heading to SHU "for her own protection") on the hit Netflix show Orange Is the New Black.
Before Cox was an Emmy-nominated actress, she worked the lecture circuit, giving inspirational speeches about her experiences as a trans woman of color. Since her breakthrough role, she has continued to speak around the country on trans issues and her personal experiences.
Her talk at Macalester College is titled "Ain't I a Woman: My Journey to Womanhood." The event will take place Tuesday, October 13, at 7 p.m. at the Leonard Center Alumni Gym on Macalester College's campus.
Cox has ties to the Twin Cities. One of her upcoming projects is a documentary on CeCe McDonald, a Minnesota trans woman who served time in a male prison (and who Cox has stated was a source of inspiration for her OITNB role). The film, titled Free CeCe!, is to be released in 2016.
