Best Buy announced today that its Richfield location is one of eight qualifying locations leading up to the 2017 Nintendo World Championships. Let's hope the experience is more like The Wizard and less like Super Mario Bros.: The Movie.
Each competition will have two divisions: 12 and under and 13 and up (no shame, adults, if you want to compete, but you will have to take down teenagers). Both age groups will play Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS.
The 12 and under will play as Mario on Nintendo DS's Luigi’s Mansion course using Standard Kart, Standard Wheels, and Super Glider. Those who are 13 and older will play as Bowser on the Game Boy Advance's Bowser Castle 1 course using Standard Kart, Standard Wheels, and Super Glider.
At the end of each location's two-day competition, the entrant with the best time trial entry in each age division will qualify for the Nintendo World Championships in New York City.
Other cities hosting qualifying rounds include Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami. There's no word on what the winner receives; 1989's The Wizard featured a Nintendo tournament that had a cash prize of $50,000. At this competition, you might just win bragging rights (or the prize will be announced at a later date).
The Richfield competition takes place on September 2-3. For more info, visit Nintendo's event website.
