Movember mustaches sprouting up around town

You may have noticed more folks with mustaches wandering about lately. The past couple years have seen a resurgence of facial hair, going so far as to be embraced by hipsters. Not only is it the second week of November, but is it also Movember, a month where oodles and oodles of mustaches are grown in support of charities around the world.

In a push to change the face of men's health, 'Mo Bros' (the men participating) are challenged to begin the month clean shaven, and then grow a mustache to raise awareness for men's cancers. There are plenty of other incentives as well, from events to parties to drink deals throughout the Twin Cities.

What began in 2003 as a joke over beers in Australia has become a global moustache movement known as Movember, reaching over 250,000 members and raising about $42 million in 2009.

Mo Bros, with the support of their ladies the Mo Sistas, will use the entire month of November to grow whatever type of 'stach suits each person. And thanks to the rather bristly addition to their face, they are welcome to plenty of events around town. For starters, every Monday night in November, Mo Bros are invited to Smalley's 87 Club in Butler Square for $2 beers and two pounds of wings for $7 (all those wings might be tough for new 'stache owners).

The third weekend in November, Legends Bar and Grill is organizing a mustache ride to Stillwater, and Neumann's Bar in North St. Paul is hosting the Mo-Stash for Cash party. The following weekend will play out in a mustache inspired bar crawl by the 12 Foundation, hopping in all their hairiness from Bulldog to Barrio.

The month of woolly faces will culminate with a Guinness Book of World Records attempt by the Minnesota Wild. At the game on November 26, all the Mo Bros attending will be invited onto the ice after the game for a photo, in the hopes of crushing the standing record of 151 mustachioed men set last year in Scotland. So that the 'stache-less don't feel left out, they'll be getting a stick on mo for fun.

Finally, the end all be all to Minnesota's Movember awareness campaign will be the Gala Party at Bootlegger's on December 2. There, participants will shine in all their 'stache glory, dressing up to enhance their moustache look to compete for a number of titles, including Best Mo in Character, Miss Movember, and the most sought after title of them all, Man of Movember 2010.
