Mixed Blood Theatre announces 2010-11 season

Here's the rundown on Mixed Blood's 2010-11 season:

A Cool Drink A Water by Thomas W. Jones II (Sept.17-Oct. 10, 2010)
--Characters from A Raisin in the Sun are updated into a comedy taking place in 2010, in which the now-middle-class Youngs are the sole African-American family remaining in a gentrified neighborhood.

House of the Spirits/La Casa de los Espiritus by Caridad Svich (Oct. 22-Nov. 4, 2010)
--This bilingual show, performed in Spanish and English, adapts Isabel Allende's novel about three generations of a family in Latin America.

Agnes, Under the Big Top, A Tall Tale by Aditi Brennan Kapil (Feb. 18-Mar. 6, 2011)
--In this world premiere, the lives of immigrants intersect in an American city in an adventure that explores and redefines the meaning of being American.

Avenue Q by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx (Mar. 25-May 1, 2011)
--Jack Reuler will direct this musical about a recent college grad and the characters he meets in an adult-themed take-off of Sesame Street. A big hit on Broadway and in touring productions, it will be re-imagined in Mixed Blood's intimate space.

So . . . an interesting season. And, no, I did not ever expect to be passing along the news that Mixed Blood was going to produce Avenue Q. On the surface, though, it's a canny choice, and one that can fit into Mixed Blood's multi-cultural mission. It's also easy to hear Reuler's laugh out there somewhere, knowing that he's thrown us one hell of a nice curveball.
