(Editor's note: This Saturday night and Sunday morning is Northern Spark, an epic, city-wide party where hundreds of artists, performing groups, and creative organizations set up pop-up galleries, present theater pieces, and host other unexpected happenings throughout the city of Minneapolis. Before the big evening, we'll be taking a look at some of the people and places you may want to check out.)
Your name: Eric F. Avery
Where we can find your this weekend?
I'll be at the Convention Center under one of the rotunda thingies.
Tell us about what you are doing at Northern Spark, and what visitors can expect:
With an amazing teams of artists, designers, and performers, we have created over 50 short pieces of music, poetry, theater, dance, puppetry, and more. Their subject: MINNEAPOLIS. Over the course of the evening, these pieces will be performed in various combinations, so no two groups of viewers will get the same experience -- just like navigation through our wonderfully rich and complicated city.
Is this your first time participating in Northern Spark?
Please tell us a little bit about what you do creatively and why:
My work as an artist occupies a space between experimental theater, visual arts, and community development. I seek to re-frame the viewers' relationship to space, and create an experience that transcends the importance of objects or permanence. I'm not terribly interested in narratives, but sometimes they arise from my work. I think that through art it is possible to create and recreate new ways to connect with one another.
Name three things that inspired and/or motivated you as a budding creative type:
Meeting new people, spending time NOT doing art, NPR
In addition to Northern Spark, what do you have going on now or coming up in the near future that should be on our radar?
I'll be doing an installation in NYC at Five Myles in August, I won a Cultural Community Partnership to work on a performance installation with Zainab Musa in September, I am currently a Naked Stages Fellow at Pillsbury House + Theatre, and I'll be teaching free workshops all summer at Western Sculpture Park for Public Art Saint Paul.
