This weekend is Art-A-Whirl, the yearly art party where hundreds of studios, galleries, and warehouses in northeast Minneapolis open their doors and invite art lovers in for special demonstrations, exhibitions, performances, and sales. This week we'll be taking a look at some of the people and places you may want to check out.
Our first profile is of Frostbeard Studio, a husband and wife operation featuring deliciously scented candles with geeky names like Butterbeer, Old Books, Mockingjay, Winterfell, and the Shire.
Your name(s): Frostbeard Studio. We're a married couple, Roxie and Tom Lubanovic.
Where we can find your this weekend: We're located in the lower level of the Q.arma Building (1224 Quincy St. NE, Suite B25), down the road from Indeed Brewery.
Years spent in your current space, and working in MN: We moved into our new studio on February 1! Before that, we worked out of our home.
[jump] Briefly, tell us about what you do and why:
We make nerdy things that need to exist. Lately, it's been mostly book-inspired candles. There was nothing similar out there, and we wanted our home to smell like a library.
Name three things that influence your work right now:
Name three things that inspired and/or motivated you as a budding creative type:
The DIY crafter scene
Being our own bosses
Creating things that make people happy
What was your last big project?
Setting up our new studio and rebuilding inventory was a huge project. Now that we're settled, we've started offering wholesale products nationwide, which is a big adventure.
What do you have going on now or coming up in the near future that should be on our radar?
Art-A-Whirl, of course, and First Thursdays Open Studios. We're constantly creating new candles, and we will be making pottery again soon.
How has the Minnesota scene changed since you began working here?
The art/craft scene has always been extremely welcoming and helpful in Minnesota. More indie shops and craft fairs keep popping up, which is awesome. We're new to Northeast, and excited about the brewery boom and new art spaces in re-purposed old buildings.
What's your favorite candle scent, and why?
We like 'em all, but have a couple favorites. Roxie loves Don't Panic (fresh towel) because of the clean laundry scent and tie-in with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Tom really likes the smell of Winterfell, which is woodsy and masculine. Old Books is our most popular.
Finally, are you doing anything special for Art-A-Whirl you'd like our readers to know about?
We're releasing two new sci-fi scents this weekend: Hoth and A Leaf on the Wind. We'll also have Frostbeard T-shirts for the first time. We'll be doing some candlemaking demos as well.
