MCAD to auction iconic Prince photograph by Robert Whitman

Each year, MCAD hosts a benefit party where artwork from former students and current faculty and staff is auctioned off. This year's collection of pieces is extra-special, as noted photographer Robert Whitman's famous Prince photo will be up for auction.

The Schmitt mural, located at 10th and Marquette, was the site of Prince's first professional photoshoot.

"He was very, very shy," said Whitman via an interview with Billboard in 2016. "But he opened up to me and he was willing to play around, willing to try different outfits. I didn't know what I was doing, so I experimented... But he really opened up and we had some silly moments. He was young and was just starting and so was I."

The MCAD auction is this Friday. The print is 40 by 60 inches, and is signed by Whitman. The photographer will also be at the celebration to give a little backstory on the image and the shoot during the live auction.

The party runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at the MCAD Gallery. Tickets aren't cheap; they'll set you back $150, and can be purchased here. Proceeds from the event benefit the MCAD scholarship fund.
