Kevin Smith: "I Hate to Disappoint People, But YES, I Am Doing a Mallrats Sequel"

Will the Mallrats gang get back together?

Will the Mallrats gang get back together?

We smell a rat. And so does Kevin Smith. What does that mean? We're getting a Mallrats sequel.

Last week, Mallrats' writer-director Smith announced his upcoming filming schedule with a well-placed hint as to what's coming up after all his other prior filming commitments.

Smith described the reaction to that tweet in his Hollywood Babble-On podcast with Ralph Garmin: "A bunch of people were like, 'What the FUCK. Is he doing a Mallrats sequel?' And they got really excited and shit... and so I hate to disappoint people, but YES, I am doing a Mallrats sequel."

Smith went on to explain part of the motivation in making the sequel: One of Mallrats' producers, Jim Jacks, was always a huge proponent of a sequel for the film -- which ended up bombing at the box office, but gaining a huge cult following after it hit home video. Jacks and Smith had talked about doing a sequel, with the idea of Mallrats 2: Die Hard in a Mall coming up. (We're into it.) Sadly, Jacks recently passed away, and now Smith wants to honor his friend and revisit the film.

What can we expect in that sequel? Probably a lot more of what Smith does best... and stuff like this:

Smith also went onto Rock102 Mornings with Shmonty & Carolina, revealing that at this point: "It's half a script right now, and we're pulling our loot together." Smith hopes to start shooting in May of 2016.

Will we see the return of Jeremy London, Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Jason Mewes, Claire Forlani, or Shannon Doherty?

No news on casting yet, but Mallrats cast member Michael Rooker (a.k.a. Mr. Svenning) liked Smith's Facebook post about the upcoming sequel... so does that mean we haven't seen the last of Mr. Svenning? In our talk with Rooker last year before Minneapolis Comic Con, he sounded delighted at the legions of Mallrats fans that still carry a torch for the cult classic. We won't rule Rooker out, unless he's too busy in a different sequel butting heads with Chris Pratt as Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last month, Smith mentioned he was interested in coming back to Mallrats' original filming location, Eden Prairie Center, to do a series of Q&As this fall. Will that turn into negotiations to film at that mall again? We can only hope.
