Kevin Keller, Archie's first gay character, gets a spin-off mini-series

Who knew that Riverdale was so progressive and open-minded? Last year, the wholesome, long-running series got a little more with the times when it added its very first gay character. His name is Kevin Keller, and he's a high school student with dashing good looks, military ambitions, and a super-supportive family. What doesn't this guy have? Love. But who knows, maybe this will change with his four-book mini-series.

[jump] The setting for the story will be Riverdale's high school, where Kevin will face popularity as class president. However, not everything will be perfect. "Even the most popular kids are not popular with everybody," writer-artist Dan Parent stated in a recent interview with New York Times. "There's some adversity he'll have to deal with."

Kevin is also an army brat; the series will follow his relationship with his military father, who is supportive of his son's plans to follow in his footsteps.

The character will also appear as a married adult in Life with Archie, the flash-forward series that follows Archie on parallel paths as an adul, one where he is married to Betty and another where he is with Veronica.

Backlash to addition of Kevin to the group has been minor. In the Times piece, co-chief executive Jon Goldwater states that they have only lost seven subscriptions.
