James J. Hill House goes over the river and back in time

No need to turn into Scrooge in order to get a date with the Ghost of Christmas Past: Just keep your holiday cheer firmly in place and let the staff at the James J. Hill house help out with your time travels. They are currently prepared to take you back in time to experience a luxurious yuletide of a bygone era.

The script for this hour-long program was written long ago, during the early years of the 20th century when the Hill's still occupied their opulent abode. Throughout the month of December, costumed actors will play busy servants, speaking the very words that were found in letters from people who worked for the Hill family, as well as stories collected from oral histories. The tour takes visitors through the first floor and basement areas, where the servants worked, providing a glimpse into the decadence of the Hill family as well as the hustle and bustle of the holiday season from the servants' point of view.

Hill House Holidays takes place on December 11, 12, 18, 19, and 26 at 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tours begin every 30 minutes and tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and $6 for children ages 6 to 17. Reservations are recommended, and can be made by calling 651.297.2555. The James J. Hill House is located at 240 Summit Avenue in Saint Paul. Other Hill House holiday programs include Victorian Christmas Stories and A Story Time Tour, both for youngsters.
