Guthrie's Wingert going to Broadway, off-Broadway musical coming to Guthrie

Sally Wingert in "Happy Days" at the Guthrie

The Guthrie announced a shake-up in their season that means long-time fabulous Twin Cities performer Sally Wingert will be striding some very big stages indeed. She's heading off to appear in the upcoming London West End and Broadway productions of David Hirson's La Bete, alongside Mark Rylance and David Hyde Pierce.

Wingert had been scheduled for Shooting Star this summer at the Guthrie, but the allure of Broadway and London is clearly too good to pass up--and for theatergoers who have watched Wingert locally over the years, the general sentiment is akin to sharing a favorite friend with acquaintances in distant locales. We're glad others get to meet her, wish her well, and can't wait to see her again.

To replace Shooting Star, the Guthrie will bring in The Scottsboro Boys, a musical that will play at the theater's McGuire Proscenium Stage July 31 through September 25. The Guthrie has by all appearances been very gracious in allowing Wingert to chase an extraordinary opportunity (bringing an intriguing show to Minnesota in the process).

"Everyone in Minnesota has known for years what a treasure we have in Sally," Guthrie artistic director Joe Dowling said in a statement. Indeed we have. Now let others find out.
