Marriage amendment leads 50 to 43

Freshwater Theatre Company is one of many theater groups and arts organizations standing up against the proposed marriage amendment on the ballot this November. In addition to voicing their opposition, the Freshwater has gone a step further. For their fall show, Better (or) Worse, which looks at how marriage has been defined and re-defined through the ages, the company is donating proceeds to Minnesota United for All Families, which is organizing against the amendment. This Saturday, they are also hosting a cabaret-style event, called Night Swim, which will be an evening of poetry, music, and performance.

Night Swim is part of Freshwater's effort to open up their space to the broader community. While the company doesn't have a permanent location, coordinator Katie Starks says that when the group rents a space to do a show -- in this case Nimbus Theatre in northeast Minneapolis -- they do their best to offer opportunities for outside artists to use the space as well. "We like to share it with as many artists as possible," she says.

Another example is that in addition to Better (or) Worse, Freshwater is also hosting a remount of Katherine Glover's successful Fringe show Dead Wrong, about a woman who finds out years after she sent a man to prison for assault that he may have been the wrong perpetrator (September 13, 14, 16, and 19). They are also hosting a concert by Mayda following this Friday's performance of Dead Wrong

"The idea for Night Swim," Starks says, "is that it's a night in solidarity." She choose the name of the evening because it's a twist on the name of the company. "I was drawing on the theme of taking a dip with us, skinny or not," she says.

Maggie Sotos will MC the event, and Katherine Glover will be doing something a bit lighter than Dead Wrong. There'll be some music by Heidi Berg and Scot Moore, with other performers including J. Merrill Motz, Rachel Flynn, JamieAnn Meyers, Jesse Corder, and John Leaf.
