Fox 9 plagiarizes City Pages A-List, Critics' Picks, Gimme Noise blog

Something is very familiar about this blurb...

It has been a strange two days on the Fox 9 web site, where City Pages content has been showing up in a section titled "Weekend Events." Though no byline has been attached to any of the stories, the Fox 9 blurbs match the City Pages items word-for-word, artwork included.

When a freelance writer alerted us to the situation, we had to take a closer look.

The copy has since been removed but appeared online under the Weekend Buzz with Jason Matheson in a section titled "Weekend Events" that, much like A-List,  featured descriptions and images for recommended upcoming happenings. Several of those items gave us a strong feeling of deja vu.

On Tuesday, two of our short pieces appeared to have been copy and pasted directly from City Pages' web site: Bryan Miller's $50 Pyramid A-List and theater critic Ed Huyck's Cabaret A-List. Take a look at the writing for the $50 Pyramid event:

City Pages says:

Talk-show host, MC, and barroom ringmaster Ian Rans is putting a new spin on the ubiquitous bar trivia with his riff on the classic game show The $10,000 Pyramid. The original series, which aired for a decade and a half, pitted two contestants against one another in a challenge to guess words and category names based on clues provided by a celebrity partner. (Think of the game Taboo but with B-list TV stars.)...

Here's how they appeared on Fox 9's website (UPDATE: It's actually still on Fox 9's website, check it out here and here):

One has to wonder if there's an overworked intern over there, or perhaps someone set the content aggregator to "plagiarize." We called up Fox 9 but by the next morning we hadn't heard back. However, we were further perplexed to discover that the copy bandit had struck again, this time yanking stories that had been posted on our site only a few hours earlier. The stories included:

A Gimme Noise blog post about STNNNG:

A Critics' Pick for Farewell Milwaukee:

And another Critics' Pick celebrating the Transmission 10-Year Anniversary:

After putting in a few more phone calls to the station, a Fox KMSP spokesperson, who was hesitant to go on record and who asked to remain nameless, issued the following statement over the phone:

"We apologize for using this content without permission. It has been removed from our site."

Well, that certainly clears things up.
