This installment kicks off with a V-Day shopping event, an art party (with booze!), and a millionaire Jeopardy! contestant.
Who knew that a hair salon could also be a gallery? At this monthly art party, Jungle Red hosts an evening showcasing work by visual artists, live music, and jewelry designers. February's installment will offer colorful, abstract paintings from Patrick Pryor. Live music will create a party atmosphere, and guests will be invited to sample appetizers from Tryg's and liqueur from Lowry Hill Liquor. Pieces from locally designed jewelry will also be on hand if you're looking for something sparkly. 7-10 p.m. Wednesday, February 5.
9th Annual Local Tribute to Buddy Holly
(Harriet Brewing: 3036 Minnehaha Ave., Minneapolis, 651-225-2184)
How can a tribute to Buddy Holly not be awesome? This evening jam will feature tunes from the rock 'n' roll pioneer, who went to the big gig in the sky 55 years ago. Local artists set to perform include Nikki and the Ruemates, Steve West and the Northern Stars, the Lanes, Joe Fahey and the Bottom 40, and Larry Havluck. If you've never been to the brewery's Tap Room, this is a good opportunity to check it out. The beer is tasty, pretty cheap, and made on site. The Tollefson Family Pork food truck will be in attendance as well should you get hungry. 6 p.m. Ken Jennings
(Red Balloon Bookshop, 891 Grand Ave., St. Paul, 651-224-8320)
Not familiar with Ken Jennings? He's not just an author, he's also a record-holder. As a contestant on Jeopardy!, he won a mind-boggling 74 games, taking in over $3 million in winnings. Trivial Pursuit champs and pub-trivia buffs, this is what happens when you aim high. Since his electric streak in 2004, Jennings has published a few books. Tonight at Red Balloon, he'll be talking about about his kid-friendly work, Ken Jennings' Junior Genius Guides. 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 6.
