Fashion Foreword: Mother's Day ideas, special sales, and bridal designs

itemprop

Happy May! The seven days of post-Prince rain have finally cleared, and it feels like summer might be right around the corner. But before we can put on our bikinis and wander down to Hidden Beach to be serenaded by drum circles and saxophonists, we have to celebrate mom. That’s right: Mother’s Day comes early this year on Sunday, May 8.

In case you haven’t gotten Mom a present, here’s a quick list of never-fail gifts.

  1. A cute card from Patina

  2. A fancy candle and a hardcover book from Magers & Quinn

  3. A spa experience at your salon of choice

  4. A gift card to Kitchen Window, mecca for foodies everywhere

  5. Dinner at Tilia

  6. Quality time with you, her favorite child

    This weekend, there's also:

Walker Art Center's Jewelry Artist Mart

You could also get mom (or yourself) a unique piece of jewelry by a local artist at the Walker’s Jewelry Artist Mart. More than 25 designers will be featured at the event, and it takes place during Free First Saturday, so you can shop and view the galleries, too. Whether your taste in jewels is delicate, gaudy, or industrial, you’ll find something to suit you. We love the modern edge of Crescere, and the architectural pieces by Dottir by Meghan Nelson. If you’re a Walker member, take 10 percent off your purchases. (Walker Art Center, 1750 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis; Saturday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

    Caroline Hayden hits the glossies

Local designer Caroline Hayden is making a serious impact in the bridal world, with her designs getting the attention of publications like Harper’s Bazaar. Hayden’s RTW and bridal collections debuted at NYFW F/W 2016, and every piece is truly exquisite. If you’re tying the knot this winter, look to the collection for gowns that are anything but the princessy mermaid styles seen on Say Yes to the Dress. We love the gowns in deep, jewel-toned velvet and the trouser suits, which are an unexpected, unforgettable choice for brides. It’s wonderful to see such a talented designer getting national recognition for her work.

Covered turns 10

Best of the Twin Cities winner Covered is celebrating its 10-year anniversary all month. Ten years in the local retail business is a big f’ing deal, so major congratulations are in order. Covered, which began as a teeny-tiny denim-focused boutique in Dinkytown, has now become an Uptown institution for stylish chicks who go from the office to a fancy dinner to Lake Minnetonka and look cool doing it. Follow @covereduptown on Instagram for specials, events, and promotions all May, and stop in to say congratulations — chances are the champagne is gonna be flowing. (Covered Uptown, 1201 Lagoon Ave., Minneapolis; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
