Emerging Designer Showcase boasts hot fashions from new talents

Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week kicked off on Friday night, and there are plenty of runway shows to catch this week. Tonight's big event will be the Emerging Designer Showcase, a fashion show that invites up-and-coming designers to present their collections at Honey in northeast Minneapolis.
Rachel Roff, the designer behind deLange designs, is one of five talents who will be showing their work at the event. Roff has been sewing since she was a teenager, and launched deLange designs shortly after she moved to Minnesota in 2009.
"I met with Cliché boutique and with stylist Hollie Mae Schutlz -- who was a big inspiration -- after I moved to the Twin Cities," Roff says. "I felt like I was able to get connected here, and that's one of the things I love about Minneapolis."

Although Roff has been designing for many years, she still considers herself an up-and-coming talent.
"I still call myself an emerging designer because I want to have a bigger presence in the Twin Cities," she says.
Designing dresses is one of Roff's favorite things to do, and she enjoys creating garments that are classy and feminine. Her collection for the Emerging Designer Showcase will feature both ready-to-wear and formalwear.
"I'm pulling from a few collections that I've created in the past year or two," Roff says. "It's a redo on some of these designs where I was able to step back from some of the pieces I'd already made and recreate them as a new collection for this show."
Roff says she looks forward to seeing what the other designers have created for the event.
"I think emerging designers sometimes have the freedom to be more creative," she says. "Newer designers aren't as tied down to a brand as an established designer would be. There's potential for a lot more creativity and visual interest."

Being a part of Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week is something that Roff looks forward to, as this will be her first time showing at a MNfashion event.
"Having a fashion week in Minnesota pushes local designers to do their best," she says. "I think MNfashion is doing a lot of good to unite the fashion community, and I'm excited to be a part of their show."
Designers Carly Shoen, Brianna Westlund, and Ellie and Becky Niemeyer will also show collections at the Emerging Designer Showcase tonight.
