"Don't get excited; put the damn thing on," Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale says, losing her patience while her daughter tries on clothes in their decrepit home. The thing Big Edie is referring to is a black nightgown. "It looks like an evening dress," she says. But her daughter, Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, does not agree. For tonight's Grey Gardens theme party at the 331 Club, however, it'd be wise to take Big Edie's advice on whatever outrageous costume you've got and, indeed, just put the damn thing on.
For those of you who don't know, Grey Gardens is the title of a fascinating documentary made in the mid-1970s. Filmmakers Albert and David Maysles spent time with the socialites-turned-hermits mother and daughter duo at their home, Grey Gardens, in East Hampton, New York. Local party hosts, The High Society Animal Hoarders know a good theme when they find it, so they have decided to host a Grey Gardens theme party tonight at the 331 Club.
Wear your cat eyeglasses, find a headwrap, affix your most outrageous brooch to it, and enter to win first place in the costume contest. Extra points for your best high-society drawl. In addition to improvised headwraps, this event calls for shoulder wraps and wrap dresses -- if you're too embarrassed to wear your nightgown. Still not sure what to wear? Get a little bit of fashion advice from Little Edie here.
Other events for the evening include a trivia session, live music by folk band The Poor Nobodys, and a screening of the documentary Grey Gardens.
There is no cover charge for The High Society Animal Hoarders: A Grey Gardens Theme Party!, which begins at 9:30 p.m. tonight at the 331 Club (331 13th Ave. NE., Minneapolis; 612.331.1746).
