This week's free stuff to do is all about beer and cider. Come take a look and plan your week.
Brewery Battle 2: Surly vs. Fulton
(Clubhouse Jäger, 923 Washington Ave. N., Minneapolis; 612-332-2686)
This installment is all about firkins and dry hops. For this delicious beer face-off, Surly Brewing will present a firkin of Todd the Axeman to go up against a Fulton firkin of dry-hopped 300. Revelers will get to sample each and then determine who takes home the Jäger Cup. Special tap brews this evening include Surly's Darkness 2015, an imperial stout with hints of cherries, chocolate, and coffee, and Fulton's Worthy Adversary, a Russian imperial stout with loads of malt, dark chocolate, and other rich notes. Meanwhile, chef Kurt Johnson will be on hand serving food to pair with the beers. 6 to 8 p.m. (4 p.m. doors) Wednesday.
Chic Brewtique Sip and Shop
(Insight Brewing, 2821 E. Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis; 612-722-7222)
While Orange Julius and Caribou kiosques abound in shopping malls, it's generally not socially acceptable to shop with a beer in your hand. You can do just that, however, at this Thursday's happening at Insight Brewery. During this party, artisans and makers will be selling their wares as the pints flow freely from taps. Items include funky yoga pants, hand-printed cards, rope and gem jewelry, cozy knitwear, mugs with Minnesota slogans, and darling handmade clutches. Get your Mother's Day gift early, or pick up something fun for yourself. A portions of the proceeds from the evening will benefit the North Side's Hospitality House. 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Symphony and Suds
(Sociable Cider Werks, 1500 Fillmore St. NE, Minneapolis; 612-758-0105)
Last year's successful happy hour has turned into this year's Symphony and Suds season, which will see members of the Minnesota Orchestra traveling to various brewpubs for pints and classical music. This Thursday, four horn players will be on hand for a chill concert in the space. Then, at Symphony in 60: Stravinsky's Petrushka April 14 in Orchestra Hall, Sociable Cider will be the featured drink. 7 p.m. Thursday.
