"I was always funny and doing impressions of my teachers in fourth and fifth grade," says comedian JL Cauvin. "I never thought about doing anything with it other than just being funny at lunch." He was halfway through law school when the idea of doing standup first presented itself. "I was at an engagement party, and all my friends were laughing their asses off, and one of them suggested that I think about doing something with comedy even as just a hobby. The summer after my second year of law school, I started going to open mics, and I never stopped." He did finish law school, and worked as an attorney for five years before taking five years off to do comedy full time. "Now I'm sort of a hybrid," he explains. "Due to financial necessity I do part-time legal work, and then I do comedy at night, traveling when I'm booked and when I get other opportunities. I'm living sort of a double existence." While he still does impressions, he doesn't do them onstage, instead saving them for the numerous sketches and parodies he does on YouTube. "Onstage it's mostly commentary and autobiographical stuff," he says. "And after doing this for quite a bit of time, I have a small but very loyal fan base." He adds with a laugh: "Very small — let me be clear. But if you come to my website, you'll always see something new that I've done. Hopefully I'll have a wider audience, we'll see. It's moving in the right direction. It's glacial, but it's moving in the right direction." With Joey Vincent.
