August and Kevin Kling go together like fresh corn on the cob and the Minnesota State Fair. For years, the locally based storyteller and performer was a presence at the Minnesota Fringe Festival. Over the past eight years, he has collaborated with Open Eye Figure Theatre on a new show during the month. These have allowed Kling to explore plenty of topics with his signature mix of humor and cosmic insight: discussing the motorcycle accident in 2001 that nearly cost him his life and altered his outlook (in Come and Get It and Flight) or taking a close look at the bond between humans and animals (the aptly titled Humanimal from last year). For Hammer, Anvil, and Stirrup, Kling and his collaborators look at the science and art of waves. After all, the title of the piece comes from the bones in the inner ear that allow us to hear. Kling works again with musicians Jacqueline Ultan and Michelle Kinney to craft a collection of stories, sketches, and songs that illustrate not just the scientific underpinnings of waves, but the emotional and spiritual connections we have with them as well. Open Eye's Michael Sommers once again directs, which means there's the possibility of puppets to go along with the rest of the evening. Seating is limited to 90 people per performance, and reservations are recommended. (Photo by Ann Marsden)
