As counter-programming to big-budget blockbuster fare, the annual Legends of Comedy at Heights Theater offers a refreshing summer alternative. The series begins with Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times (1936), a satiric masterpiece that intertwines physical comedy and social commentary as the Little Tramp fights against becoming a cog (literally) in the industrial machine. Fellow screen icon W.C. Fields, the sharp-witted curmudgeon, gets his own double feature with The Bank Dick (1940), which will be paired with his Hollywood-skewering swan song, Never Give a Sucker an Even Break (1941). Esteemed comedy team Laurel and Hardy hatch a typically ill-fated scheme to conceal a trip from their wives in Sons of the Desert (1933), preceded by the equally chaotic slapstick short Helpmates (1932). More irreverent humor abounds in Blazing Saddles (1974), Mel Brooks's delirious spoof of Hollywood Westerns and racial bigotry. Closing out the series in appropriately absurdist fashion is famed director Billy Wilder's inaugural American production, The Major and the Minor (1942), starring Ginger Rogers as a woman who learns that pretending to be 12 years old for the sake of a discounted train ticket can lead to hilarious consequences.
