Excepting a minor (though memorable) role in the 1981 comedy The Cannonball Run, Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan had remained largely unseen by U.S. audiences until the international release of Rumble in the Bronx (1995). Filled with astonishing stunt sequences, choreographed with perilous precision, and performed with acrobatic skill by the death-defying star, the film brought Chan global acclaim. But while his popularity continued with such big-budget Hollywood fare as Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon, many of his newfound fans would never witness Chan's most remarkable achievements on the screen. Thankfully, Trylon microcinema is providing a canvas for Jackie Chan Adventures, a five-film retrospective of kung-fu classics in which raucous fight sequences and jaw-dropping stunt work seamlessly blend with comedic flourishes. The reflections of silent-era comedians like Buster Keaton, for example, can be found throughout the undercover police caper Supercop (1992). Such humor also follows Chan as he takes on 19th-century pirates in Project A (1983) and races to recover Nazi gold in Operation Condor (1991). As for audacious physicality, audiences will seldom find more intense hand-to-hand combat than in The Legend of Drunken Master (1994) or the staggering stunts of the aforementioned Rumble in the Bronx. Through each film, the charismatic Chan unveils a display of daredevil bravado stunning enough to shame the innocuous action of digitized modern blockbusters. (Pictured: Rumble in the Bronx)
