Warm weather has returned to the Midwest, so that means the return of comedian John DeBoer to the clubs. Summer is when the veteran comic takes a break from doing corporate functions and dives back into the comedy-club scene. "I basically split my time between Minnesota and Florida, but I do it backwards," he explains. "I was up in the Midwest for most of this last winter from hell. Is it me, or do you get a feeling that 'polar vortex' was a marketing term for something? I think this year I will split my time between Florida and Ecuador." Splitting time between the two types of gigs, corporate and club, usually entails having two slightly different sets. Very often that means coming up with jokes for one audience that don't necessarily work for the other. "For corporate events you have to stay away from anything political, sexual, or even remotely dark," he says. "That is why I like having the balance of both types of shows. I love the freedom of being able to do whatever is on my mind at a comedy club, yet it is also very satisfying to do a corporate event and have people come up to you after the show saying how much they enjoyed it and that they appreciated the fact that you kept it clean." Sometimes his corporate work can ride that edge. "I was doing a show for a plastics company last winter, and I asked the guy what he did at the company. He said, 'I'm a master packer.' The crowd laughed hysterically right there. In times like that you just let them write their own joke. I grabbed the contract out of my back pocket and said, 'Let me check this for a minute to see what my options are for responding to that.'" With Chris Knutson.
