More About

The Twin Cities' hip-hop scene thrives, and curator Maia Maiden shows us every aspect of it in this wide-ranging choreographers' evening. Fourteen groups show their stuff, including house, tap, breaking, popping, African, and old-school hip-hop. Fourteen-year-old Cecil Raphael Neal, a.k.a. CYBORG, incorporates his mother's Afro Caribbean roots into popping that also features elements of trap-step, dub-step, dancehall, and R&B, while ShapeShift uses hip-hop and contemporary movement to tell stories of love and conflict. Kenna-Camara Cottman's Voice of Culture Drum and Dance immerses us in traditional West African dancing and drumming on authentic instruments, with influences of jazz, hip-hop, and other diasporic styles. The battle-winning crew Looney Tunes offers the best and brightest of b-boy culture, while the women are represented by Aneka Starlashay McMullen's Epitome-No Question, dedicated to returning the focus of hip-hop culture to its community-conscious roots through dance theater.
