The Monkees

Hey, hey, they're still the Monkees, appropriately opening the Zoo's summer music series. Nearly 50 years after being assembled by corporate types for a TV show in the anarchic spirit of the Beatles' A Hard Day's Night, the group once derisively called the prefab four is still having fun while enjoying belated critical respect, albeit without singer Davy Jones, who died in 2012. Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Micky Dolenz are still performing all the band's enduring pop nuggets, initially written by ace songsmiths like Neil Diamond, Tommy Boyce, and Bobby Hart. But they'll also focus on their third album, Headquarters, and later material, when they finally were allowed to write their own songs and actually play their instruments. Still with plenty of monkeying around, of course.
