Glasgow's Mogwai are among the faces of instrumental rock's Mount Rushmore. They're a tad less ambitious than Godspeed and lean away from the beautifully polished songs of Explosions in the Sky, but remain as creatively formidable as either. Stuart Braithwaite and his Glaswegian bandmates have emphasized such things as the power of massive guitars, architecting fortresses of Marshall stacks, and maintaining a vigorous rhythm section. They're consistent, too, a streak that dates back to their mid-'90s origins, onto scores for Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait and The Fountain, Japanese bonus tracks, and beyond. Their album from January, Rave Tapes, is familiarly heavy, but it's also impressive during the more electronic compositions (for one, gale force closer "The Lord Is Out of Control"). With Majeure, a.k.a. Zombi drummer A.E. Paterra. 18+.
