Kira Obolensky and Ten Thousand Things have produced several fruitful collaborations in the past, including the award-winning Raskol (an adaptation of Crime and Punishment) in 2009, and Vasa Lisa in 2012. Over the next few years, the relationship will intensify as Obolensky works as the company's playwright in residence. The first fruit of that collaboration opens for the public this weekend, as Dirt Sticks plays at Open Book in Minneapolis. In the play, Obolensky looks at the power of stories and how the past can tie us down. It centers on a peddler who arrives in a town with the power to show people the past. This offers an opportunity for those connected to Rose Wand — who died two decades before — to finally escape into their own lives. Ten Thousand Things artistic director Michelle Hensley directs the show, which has already toured prisons, homeless shelters, and other venues in an effort to reach nontraditional theater audiences. The cast includes Stephen Cartmell, Sun Mee Chomet, H. Adam Harris, Thomasina Petrus, and Kimberly Richardson. (Photo by Paula Keller)
