As a rough and ready rule, poetry readings should be closer in length to an episode of House of Cards than a staging of Macbeth, but while the Great Twin Cities Poetry Read is, well, not short, its format works strongly in favor of zippiness and festivity. Now in its fifth year, the event features 30 poets reading one poem each, so you'll hear a variety of outstanding work, and if something rubs you the wrong way, you won't be suffering long. This time, the poets were selected by local journals, publishing houses, writing programs, and other literary operations, using a system indebted to something called the NFL draft. Readers include Heid Erdrich, Katrina Vandenberg, Dobby Gibson, Matt Rasmussen, Sun Yung Shin, Dessa, and Matt Mauch, who is also the event's impresario and emcee.
