Playing with Fire

This Thursday, Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center opens an exhibition featuring local and national artists in conjunction with the Society of North American Goldsmith's annual metalsmithing conference. The show, "Playing with Fire," features eight nationally recognized metal artists, as well as talents based in the Twin Cities. They'll be displaying works including jewelry, handmade steel knives, and hand-formed vessels. The show's public reception will also be an opportunity to check out the center's facilities, and to get a taste of some of its programs as instructors will demonstrate techniques such as blacksmithing and making glass beads. Curated by Heather Doyle and Carol Warner, the exhibition includes work by Irish artist Kevin O'Dwyer, who will be showing his Damascus knives; Chicago-based artists Daryls Ewold, who makes teapots and sculptural vessels; and Heejin Hwang, who makes steel and gold jewelry. Susan Hunt, who is from Menomonie, will have her sterling tableware and candelabras on display, while Barbara Minor will present her enameled jewelry. Other artists include Heinz Brummel and Carol Warner, both from Minneapolis, and Rick Dunkerley from Lincoln, Montana. The public reception is from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 24.
