The hyperactive glitch-pop of Ohio duo Twenty One Pilots fits our current mash-up cultural moment perfectly. Their major-label debut album, Vessel, darts between oddball rap, Glee-style mega-crooning, and agit-rock rioting — often within a single song. Genre-hopping this extreme is admirable in theory, but often overwrought in practice. With Katy Perry/Adele producer Greg Wells aboard, Vessel is Twenty One Pilots' voyage toward the mainstream spotlight. Anyone wondering what Fun would sound like if they prominently incorporated backpack-rap into the mix will be delighted. With NONONO and Hunter Hunted.
