The Shadow War

In commemoration of the U.S.'s Shadow War in Laos, where the U.S. dropped 260 million cluster bombs and destroyed many villages from 1964 to 1973, We Theater presents a new, collaboratively created work. The Shadow War was written by playwright Amy Russell, with input from a cast that includes Hmong actors as well as director Teresa Mock, whose father was a Vietnam veteran. Russell grew up in Laos while her father worked for USAID building fish farms for the Royal Lao government before her family was evacuated in 1971. She began writing about the war four years ago, and over the past two years has developed the piece with We Theater, receiving input from the Center for Hmong Studies and the Lao Assistance Center of Minnesota. The play's opening-night gala includes an honor guard presented by the Special Guerrilla Unit-Hmong Vets. There will be community panel discussions Thursday through Saturday, April 17-19.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: April 16. Continues through April 27, 2014
