Shapiro & Smith Dance

Shapiro & Smith's spring concert plays just about every note on the emotional scale. Artistic director Joanie Smith unveils "Narcissus," in which our current infatuation with social media mirrors the obsession with self that plagued the mythological Greek hunter. Smith also reprises "Jack," a cheeky duet that investigates various Jacks in nursery rhymes, and was a favorite from last season. The soundscape by Brian Sostek reveals the dark origins of those nimble Jacks who sit in corners and tumble down hills. Possible historical references include Louis XVI, who broke his crown on the guillotine, and Marie Antoinette, who came tumbling after. With her late husband, Daniel Shapiro, Smith created a stark investigation of the Holocaust, "What Dark/Falling into Light," in 1996. She aims to carry the story to a new audience, along with the couple's physically charged "Dance with Two Army Blankets" (which, happily, has nothing to do with war). (Image by V. Paul Virtucio)
