The release of Sharon Jones's fifth album with the Dap-Kings, Give The People What They Want, and follow-up tour was postponed last summer when the soul diva was diagnosed with bile duct cancer. Following surgery, chemotherapy, and a recuperative period, the godmother of soul returns to the road with the horn-fueled D-Kings. The new album is another delirious dose of the band's classic soul, funk, and R&B mix, all glistening with raw, sweat-soaked energy. The deftly drawn, all-original material ranges from the stoned soul glide of "Making Up and Breaking Up" and slippery, Memphis-style funk of "Long Time, Wrong Time" to the raucous, muscular Motown-like workout "Stranger to My Happiness." Each is electrified by Jones's glorious voice, which oozes nuance and power, and her wonderfully agile big band. Together they've created a new classic of good old soul.
