Matt Slocum & Friends

New York-based, St. Paul-born drummer Matt Slocum returns for two special performances showcasing his new album, Black Elk's Dream, as well as some of the Twin Cities' premier jazz artists. Each night will feature Slocum's trio, which includes pianist Sam Yahel and bassist Massimo Biolcati, followed by a "drum dialogue" between Slocum and his high school mentor, local drum icon Phil Hey. A set by Hey's quartet will round out Wednesday's show. On Thursday, prolific local piano ace Bryan Nichols will open with a solo set, and things will wrap up with the Dave Karr Quartet, featuring multiple-reed master Karr, Hey, pianist Chris Lomheim, and bassist Brian Courage. Meanwhile, Black Elk's Dream is a sublime interpretation of the visionary Oglala Lakota leader's philosophy, life, and times, the melodic sophistication of Slocum's compositions wonderfully realized by his lithe, restless percussion, plus Biolcati, pianist Gerald Clayton, and saxophonists Walter Smith and Dayna Stephens.
