Joel Sass returns to the directing chair at the Jungle with the regional premiere of Detroit, a comedy that pokes and prods at modern American middle-class life. Lisa D'Amour's play examines the world through a pair of couples. Ben and Mary are longtime residents of a nice neighborhood in a first-tier suburb, while Sharon and Kenny have just moved in next door. In a few short years, D'Amour has built a solid reputation as an experimental and probing playwright. Detroit has earned a number of plaudits over the past few years, including an Obie Award for best new play. Sass's own aesthetic matches well with D'Amour's vision, as his past work at the Jungle — such as last year's Venus in Fur — often pushes expectations to the edge. A talented quartet of actors has been brought in for the production, led by John Middleton as the recently unemployed Ben, Angie Timberman as the on-the-way-to-alcoholic Mary, and Anna Sundberg and Tyson Forbes as Sharon and Kenny.
