Political upheaval has both plagued and inspired the Grammy-winning North African Taureg band Tinariwen. And it forced the group to trade one desert for another to record their new album, Emmaar. Turmoil in the Sahara sent Tinariwen to California's Joshua Tree area, whose harsh beauty can also be reflected in the band's sinuous, drone-like, haunting cry of electric guitars. After the acoustic orientation of 2011's Tassili, electric guitars again insistently pierce the group's undulating melodies. As on Tassili, a few American guests add subtle touches, including Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and Fats Kaplin's whiny pedal steel on "Toumast Tincha," plus Kaplin's swirling fiddle on "Imidiwan Ahi Tifhamam." But whatever the locale, Tinariwen's sinewy grace echoes a desert wind that originates deep in the Sahara. The Melodic, an English folk band with a strong Andean influence, will open.
