Some 40 years after his death, Jimi Hendrix remains a key influence on both musicians who were his contemporaries and those who could be his children and grandchildren. The strength of Hendrix's legacy in part is reflected in the caliber of artists who turn out annually for this tribute tour. The rhythm section is bassist Billy Cox (pictured), longtime Hendrix pal who was a member of Band of Gypsies, and drummer Chris Layton, who played with Hendrix disciple Stevie Ray Vaughan in Double Trouble. The guitarists, who will hook up in different combinations, include Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, locally connected Jonny Lang, South Dakota's Mato Nanji of Indigenous, Aerosmith's Brad Whitford, the Black Crowes' Rich Robinson, Dweezil Zappa, Texan Doyle Bramhall II, and Henri Brown, Jimi's cousin. Finally there's Dani Robinson and Stan Skibby, Americans who play in Hendrix tribute bands in the Czech Republic and Poland, respectively, proving that purple haze knows no temporal or national borders.
