Fans and residents of the Wedge neighborhood will remember Muddy Waters as the coffee shop mainstay at the corner of 24th Street and Lyndale Avenue. And while rent was one of the reasons the shop left the space, instead of shutting down completely it moved down the street and expanded its offerings in new and wonderful ways. The dry scones and bakery goods that inexplicably thrive at every coffee shop have been replaced with baked goods that a laptop user can actually sustain herself on. Or, if you're really hungry, order something up from the full menu, which includes pub and cafe items like pizza, sandwiches, and salads. In addition to coffee brewing, the space features a huge beer and wine list (which makes sense as the co-owner, Paddy Whelan, used to work for Surly). Happy hour runs from 3 to 5 p.m. and features $2 beers like Grain Belt Premium, Hamm's, Old Style, PBR, Fat Tire, Bud, and Lone Star. Wine deals range from $3 to $4 a pour. Be sure to hang out on the thin, cute patio at least once before the season ends, and be forewarned that it can get crowded later at night.
