Brad Mehldau, 43, is a virtuoso pianist often cited as among the most influential jazz musicians of his generation. But his insatiable interests and impact stretch well beyond jazz, as these two dates should amply demonstrate. Tuesday, Mehldau will team up with Nickel Creek/Punch Brothers mandolinist/singer Chris Thile, whose technique is as spectacular as Mehldau's while his bluegrass roots similarly have grown into broad musical tastes along with a love of improvisation. Reprising a handful of dates a year ago, the duo is likely to stir up innovative takes on eclectic material ranging from Charlie Parker to Radiohead, Bach, Dylan, the Beach Boys, and Appalachian reels. Wednesday, Mehldau will play with his regular trio — drummer Jeff Ballard and bassist Larry Grenadier — as fine and intuitive an ensemble as in all of jazz, using complex and subtle language to redefine music of multiple origins.
