Penumbra Theatre Company continues its season with the latest production presented at the Guthrie Theater. The Mountaintop envisions Martin Luther King Jr.'s final hours before being assassinated in Memphis. Katori Hall's Olivier Award-winning script connects King with one of the hotel's young maids. Their conversation allows the playwright — and the viewer — to explore and examine King's life, legacy, and lasting impact on American culture. The play has seen several successful productions in recent years, including London and on Broadway. Penumbra's founder and co-artistic director takes the directing reigns, while James T. Alfred plays King, and Erika LaVonn takes on the role of Camae, the maid. This is also the latest production presented at the Guthrie by Penumbra, following A Raisin in the Sun (which also featured LaVonn), Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (which included Alfred), and The Amen Corner.
