This Friday, local poet and memoir writer David Mura celebrates the publication of his first book of poems in 10 years, The Last Incantations. The author, whose previous awards include the National Poetry Contest and the Carl Sandburg Literary Award, is known for writing from a multicultural perspective. In this latest piece Mura, who is third-generation Japanese-American, weaves personal experiences with cross-cultural history. With his poetic dexterity, Mura uses various forms and voices — including performative, long-form, and lyric — to explore challenges and celebrations of identity, culture, and history. The launch event will also highlight the writing of a few of Mura's author friends, including Alexs Pate, Ed Bok Lee, Bao Phi, and Julianna Pegues, who will all read from their work. Mura often includes performance elements in his appearances, so expect a dynamic reading. The event will honor Mura's late aunt, his writing mentor and inspiration, whose birthday is today.
