Texas guitar slinger Jimmie Vaughan founded the Fabulous Thunderbirds with Kim Wilson in 1974. Both the T-Birds and Vaughan became legendary figures in their Austin hometown and across the globe for their influential take on tough, swaggering Texas R&B, roadhouse, and jump blues. Among those who took notice was Vaughan's younger brother, Stevie Ray, who forged his own distinctive path before tragedy struck. Jimmie launched a solo career after leaving the T-Birds and remains an Austin stalwart. He recently released two rippling, scintillating volumes (Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites) of relatively obscure nuggets from the likes of Jimmy Reed, Roscoe Gordon, Roy Milton, and Huey Meaux. The sound on each is lean, no-nonsense, and wonderfully immediate. Vaughan's guitar lines are terse and laser sharp, especially when offset by the horns, and sparks especially fly when he trades vocals with the fabulous Lou Ann Barton, who'll be along at the Dakota and alone is worth the price of admission.
