With the addition of multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi, the Pat Metheny Unity Band morphed into the Unity Group. In doing so, virtuoso jazz guitarist Metheny again expanded a sonic palette that already had been enriched by adding saxophonist Chris Potter to a core of drummer Antonio Sanchez and bassist Ben Williams. Carmassi plays multiple horns and woodwinds, plus piano. His presence doesn't make Unity's sound bigger so much as adds dimension to its sublime mix of Metheny's experimentation and lyricism, and the rest of the band's textural sophistication. So the newly released Kin (←→) soars on "Rise Up," its fluid melodic wings driven by the earthy intensity of the rhythm section, and glides into lush contemplation on "Adagia," while the title cut is a swirling fusion maelstrom calmed by Potter's blues and gospel touches and Metheny's gorgeous pointillism.
